The Southern African Cape coast, and especially Hermanus is one of the best land based whale-watching spots in the world. It’s also one of only a handful of places in the world where it’s possible to see whales from coastal footpaths, beachside eateries or even from your sea-view hotel window. I have been privileged enough to stand on the side of the picturesque R44, which snakes its way along the coast between Gordon’s Bay and Hermanus – the fynbos-covered peaks of the Kogelberg Nature Reserve behind me, and the endless Atlantic Ocean in front – watching the majestic scene of a pod of Southern Right Whales frolicking in the surf below. Elatedly, I imagined they were so close that I could almost reach out my hand and touch them.

It is a breath-taking wildlife experience comparable with nothing else, and a sight that must be experienced at least once in your lifetime.
